• Needle - A strong wooden beam used with props to support the section of a wall above where an opening has been created before the installation of an RSJ or lintel.
• Newel - The post at the top or bottom of a staircase, which supports the handrail.
• Newel Cap - The ornamental piece of wood on top of the newel post.
• Nogging-pieces - Short horizontal pieces of timber which stiffen the studs of a partition frame.
• Non-bearing Wall - A wall which carries only its own weight (it does not support the structure of the building). If required a non-bearing wall can removed without causing structural problems.
• Nosing - The projecting rounded edge of a step or moulding.
